Belper North Mill brings together the history of the Strutt family, the story of Belper as a town and the early developments in cotton spinning and factory building. It has many tales to tell and over the months to come I hope to share some of them with you.
I am the new manager at the Mill. My father's family background is rooted in the Lancashire cotton industry, and according to family legend, my great grandfather retired at forty on the proceeds of an invention he sold to Courtaulds. I was introduced to industrial archeology at an early age, thanks to an enthusiastic museum curator in Monton, Manchester, close to Engels' family factory and the Bridgewater Canal.
Belper North Mill is part of of Unesco's World Heritage Site, which runs along the River Derwent from Matlock Bath to Derby. It's often referred to as the cradle of the industrial revolution.
Much of this heritage can still be seen and shared, thanks to enthusiasts and volunteers who have safeguarded buildings, sites and stories.
Some of you reading this may live close enough to visit. Others may be on holiday in the area. Wherever in the world you come from, you can share the story through the Belper North Mill and the World Heritage Site websites.
